Did you know that August is “Make-A-Will Month”?

“FareStart has been part of our family’s life for more than two decades. In that time, we’ve watched the organization grow, adapt, and navigate moments that would have tested any organization – from building a pioneering social enterprise model, to reinventing its operations almost overnight during the pandemic to feed a city in crisis. Through every chapter, FareStart has remained true to its mission, and the work has only grown more urgent and more relevant.
We want to stay engaged with FareStart for as long as we can, and to help carry its mission forward long after we can’t. Including FareStart in our estate plan is how we do both.”
Kat Korab, FareStart Board member and member of the FareStart Legacy Circle, and spouse Alex Hopmann
Planning your legacy is an important task – important for you, your family and loved ones, and it can be important for our community too. Including charitable gifts through a will, trust, or retirement account creates hope and new possibilities for the future. A bequest or other planned gift to support FareStart students has a ripple effect – when people achieve personal stability and economic mobility, it has a lasting positive impact and the whole community benefits.
Your legacy gift will help ensure that FareStart remains a vital resource for adults and young people in need of opportunity for decades to come.
Additionally, in making a will or estate plan, you will be:
- Protecting family and loved ones. Reviewing your plan regularly means adjusting for changes in personal relationships, tax laws, births, deaths and state of residence.
- Making the most of your assets. Planning with the help of qualified professionals helps grow your wealth over the long term.
- Being tax smart. Certain assets can be tax burdens or tax surprises. Planning helps you stay in the loop and possibly avoid a tax hit altogether.
Legacy Gifts can be simple:
- Bequests can easily be included in your will.
- Even easier – you can make a gift via beneficiary designations of bank, investment, retirement accounts and life insurance policies with a simple form.
- Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) – you can make FareStart part of your succession plan for your DAF (something every DAF holder should have!)
Make time this month to review or start your plan and feel confident that you are prepared for the future, and that your legacy will match your values and hopes.
If you have already made a planned gift to FareStart but haven’t let us know, please do! You can contact us any time at donate@farestart.org or 206.267.6224.
