Markia's Story: "Don’t give up, don’t back down, you got this."
Markia (she/her) was trying to figure out how to get back to her old self after fracturing her ankle, dislocating her knee and searching for a new job, all while being a single parent. Feeling she was falling deep into depression, Markia had a challenging time getting out of bed because of the stress and obstacles in her life.
When the pandemic hit, her life took another turn, which she shares affected her emotional state. Following the loss of a job and new health obstacles, Markia wanted change. In 2022, she pushed herself out of her comfort zone and decided to apply to FareStart’s youth program. Shortly after applying, Markia was accepted into the virtual Youth & Young Adult Barista Program’s job readiness track, which is in partnership with the Y Social Impact Center who assist with housing and offer counseling services to youth and young adults experiencing homelessness, foster care or other challenges.
Markia never expected that she would learn not only about barista and customer skills, but also interview skills, self-care activities and most importantly, a lot about herself. Markia’s life started to unfold during the program, and Markia shares that she started to feel gratitude and conquered her fear of speaking up for herself.
Today, Markia works in the warehouse industry. She also is beginning her journey of following her passion and hobby of starting a lash business. She says she would like to be more involved in her community by speaking with and sharing advice to women and teens going through similar situations, saying, “it takes a village.”
When asked what advice she would have for others who may have a similar experience to her own, she said, “Don’t give up, don’t back down, you got this. Yes, they’ve hurt you, disappointed you. But you are not your hurt, you are not your pain. You are beautiful – you are more than what people have done to you. You matter and everything that has happened to you has happened for a reason because you are built for this. Do not let one downfall keep you down, do not let a trip and fall keep you down – you can get back up and keep pushing because God gives his hardest battles to His toughest soldiers. You got this and God has got you.”
We are all so proud of Markia and all of her success!
