Jack's Story: Adult Training Graduate

March 10, 2022

After being out of the workforce for a decade, Jack (he/him) began applying and interviewing for jobs while in FareStart’s virtual Adult Culinary Program. After he completed the program, it did not take him long to secure a machinery operator position at Charlie’s Produce. Jack now is working for Charlie’s Produce in their fresh produce department dicing peppers, onions and tomatoes that he combines to make six different kinds of salsa.

While he was in the program, Jack learned computer and writing skills, self-empowerment, financial planning and interview skills. FareStart supported Jack every step of the way by assisting with housing, providing a bus pass and offering counseling services during and after the program.

When asked about his time in the virtual Adult Culinary Program Jack said, “thanks to the FareStart virtual program; they not only helped me write and refine my resume and cover letter, they also kept a roof over my head.”

FareStart is exploring different ways to support graduates along their job search journey, including additional focused case management. The goal is to alleviate some of the stress and anxiety when starting a new job. With the support of FareStart’s Social Service Specialist, Jack planned his early morning bus commute, coordinated his weekly work schedule and communicated how his job at Charlie’s Produce will ensure he continues his pathway towards personal stability and economic mobility. This ongoing support ensures that Jack’s individualized needs are being addressed and he has everything he needs to excel in his job.

Jack found employment where he feels valued in the work he does and says he feels Charlie’s Produce will support him with career advancement opportunities. For all these reasons, Jack says, “I love my job and what I do, and see myself staying at Charlies for a long time – maybe another 10 or 12 years until retirement.”
